HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR A TATTOO TO HEAL?

Tattoo nedles breaking the outer layer of the skin

Even if it's a small one, tattooing means damaging the skin. Thereby fresh tattoos are just like open wounds. Depending on the heaviness of the tattoo, it usually takes 1-4 weeks to be healed entirely. However, the entire healing process may take several months.

During the healing process, it's crucial to follow the aftercare instructions carefully. Also, avoiding or limiting certain activities may help to maintain a healthy tattoo.

HEALING PROCESS

Light tattoos heal faster, while heavy tattoos take longer to heal. The age of the tattoo owner is another factor. Here's a typical process for an ordinary person to expect.

Day 1-4

1MM Tattoo artists usually cover the tattoed area with a medical bandage after the procedure. The dressing helps secure the tattooed area and protects the tattoo from the outside world.

In this step, clear liquids ooze from the tattoo. This mixture of excess ink and body liquid is typical, and there is nothing to be alarmed about.

A slight redness and warming up are also expected and can be avoided by applying a bag of ice to the tattoo. Fifteen minutes of ice treatment helps speed up the healing process.

Day 5-15

The tattoo should feel less sore and red. However, it might seem duller than initially, and this condition is a sign of healing.

At this stage, you might see the tattoo is scabbing, and the skin begins to feel itchy. It is crucial to refrain from scratching the skin or picking up the scabs as it can lead to scarring.

Peeling is a normal part of healing, as the skin rids itself with damaged cells. It's essential to keep skin moisturized at this stage.

The scabs get hardened, and they flake off naturally. It is still important to avoid picking the scabs, as they can disturb the underlying ink.

Day 16 & beyond

The outer layer of the skin is completely healed, but moisturizing is still essential. The lower layers of the skin may take several months to heal.

Poor tattoo hygiene is an essential factor that slows the healing process and can lead to severe health issues.
